Monofacial Solar panel
Single glass solar panels, also known as monofacial solar panels, are the startup of steps in renewable solar energy. They are called single glass because the solar cells are packed behind the single glass technology. The reason they are called monofacial is that ‘mono’ means single or one and ‘facial’ means face. So monofacial means a solar panel with single face or single glass.
Bifacial Solar panel

Monocrystalline Solar Panels
Silicon is the most common material used in solar panels due to its excellent semiconducting properties. The term “Mono” in monocrystalline refers to “single” or “one,” signifying that Monocrystalline solar panels are made from a single crystal structure of silicon, allowing for higher efficiency and better electricity generation. This pure silicon layer allows the cells to function more efficiently as compared to polycrystalline solar panels. Monocrystalline solar panels are expensive than polycrystalline panels due to the process of growing a single crystal of silicon which increases manufacturing costs. They have higher efficiency around 18-22%.
Polycrystalline Solar Panels
The word ‘Poly’ in polycrystalline refers to the fact that these solar panels are made from silicon that is crystallized in multiple directions. Unlike monocrystalline panels, which are made from a single crystal of silicon, polycrystalline panels are formed by melting silicon and allowing it to cool and solidify into multiple crystals. This process is simpler making polycrystalline panels less expensive than monocrystalline panels. However, the multiple crystals result in less efficient electron flow compared to the single crystal structure of monocrystalline panels and therefore, these solar panels are less efficient. They have slightly lower efficiency around 15-17%.
Thin-Film Solar Panels
Thin-Film solar panels are a type of solar technology. A very thin layer of photovoltaic material is used to convert sunlight into electricity. Unlike monocrystalline an polycrystalline solar panels which are made from silicon, these can be made from several materials such as cadmium telluride (CdTe), amorphous silicon (a-Si), or copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS). They are very cheap and less expensive than crystalline silicon solar panels. Although, their efficiency is also low which is around 10-12% but still they prove to be very useful.
